A seat at our table
Founded over a century ago, Rinkoff’s is a Jewish family business that specialises in good people and better bakes. Fusing traditional recipes from our homeland with contemporary ideas from our master bakers, our Whitechapel coffee shops are community hubs that bring people together. With three generations on the floor (and countless sibling and parent duos in our team) we’re devoted to creating inclusive spaces with people and pastries at our core.
While a lot remains from our 1911 heritage — like our delicious specialty bread, challah and cakes — a lot has changed too (note: the distinct lack of waxed moustaches).
It’s that legacy of innovation that led us to inventing the Crodough. Who knew 100 years of new ideas was even possible? It must be a Rinkoff thing.
Hyman Rinkoff was born in 1885 and came over from the Ukraine with his beloved recipes. At just 25 he opened his first shop in 1911 on Old Montague Street East London — we still bake with many of his original recipes today.
Max, Hymans youngest son, was born in 1924 and joined the business in the 1950’s. Known for his calm and caring nature, he managed the shop in Jubilee Street for many years alongside his adoring wife Sylvie.
Sylvie was born in 1923 and met Max when she was just 13. They married young and had 3 boys; Derek, Harvey and Ray. Sylvie served in the shop 6 days a week and kept it immaculate with everything in its place. We still have customers today, who remember her fondly!
Ray is the youngest of Max and Sylvie’s children. He was the first of the brothers to join the business and has been working here for over 50 years. Ray trained as a master baker and worked in the original bakery in Old Montague Street — His baking knowledge is still strong, and he can plait a challah at lightning speed!
Derek is the eldest of the 3 brothers. He previously trained as a hairdresser before coming into the business in his 30’s. He paved the way for our wholesale business, acquiring customers such as Lehman brothers & goldman sachs. Derek has semi retired now but still heads up our finance department.
Harvey is the middle of the 3 brothers and joined the business in the 80’s as Head of Sales, helping to bring new customers onboard and establishing Rinkoff’s as one of the finest Wholesale bakeries in London!
Lloyd is Derek’s eldest son and joined the bakery when he was just thirteen. He learnt the trade through Ray, his Uncle, and still bakes today — whilst also managing our bakery logistics, including our drivers, bakery staff and packing team! Favourite bakery product: ‘’So many to choose from! But it’s got to be the mini raisin twist; especially hard to resist on a Friday’’
Jennifer, Is Ray’s eldest daughter, and joined the team in 2007. Jen heads up new product development, marketing and social media. If you’ve ever liked a photo on our Instagram, it’s because of her. She’s the woman behind our famous Crodough — you can thank her later. Favourite bakery product: ‘’ it’s got to be a crodough! Hard to pick a favourite, but if I had to…. Cherry pie’’!
Debs, Ray’s youngest daughter, joined Rinkoff’s in 2017 and now runs our wholesale operation; handling new business enquiries and making sure all our customers are well looked after. She also manages our coffee shop at Jubilee Street, and the wonderful staff working in it. Favourite bakery product: ‘’Easily our chocolate & almond croissant; the perfect hybrid delicacy’’!
Ben is Lloyd’s eldest son and third redhead to join the family business. Ben is learning the baking trade of Rinkoff’s, and has already established himself as an integral member of the team. You’ll mostly find Ben in our pastry section, he’s your go to man for cookies! Favourite bakery product: ‘’Just like my dad, I can’t resist a mini danish… but I’d take chocolate over raisin any day’’.
Daniel is Lloyd’s youngest son, and newest recruit to the family business. Like his brother, he can be found in the pastry section, but has a keen eye for bread too! You’ll spot Daniel on the Crodough counter making sure each one is piped to perfection. Favourite bakery product: ‘’No contest, it’s got to be our vegan cinnamon bun’’!
